Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Review

When he came out the Canon EOS 5D in 2005 made history as it was the first full frame digital facing users do not necessarily professionals. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II in 2008 also made history as it was the first full frame capable of carrying video. With the release of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III this full frame reaches its maturity. Correct all the problems of the two previous series, such as the auto focus module not up to the rest of the data sheet. Now there is a new 61-point auto focus module, of which 41 to 5 to cross and double cross.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Design

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III falls very nicely in the hand. The aesthetic is a true professional, with clean lines of the pentaprism, also thanks to the fact that is completely lacking a flasher. Personally, I do not like this choice, as it forces to carry around an external Speedlight in all those occasions when a flash with low NG would be enough for a fill-flash or to control other devices wirelessly.

For anyone who is not a regular user of Canon cameras is not immediate understanding of the use of certain logic commands. Some keys have two functions, depending on whether after being pressed to rotate the ring near the shutter button or the back.

Always the rear dial is also dedicated to compensation. I must admit I had to resort to the manual just to find out how to overexpose and underexpose. In any case, thanks to the many keys, also customizable, the camera is fully adjustable without having to dive through the menus.

It is useful in this case the “Q” key that activates the screen with a summary of the settings, can be easily modified with the small joystick to move your thumb. I appreciated the commands between the two blocks, one to avoid displacement of the ring back, and one to avoid moving the exposure mode dial.

Beautiful and bright viewfinder, too bad its central location is a little problem for me is that I have a nose glasses that not just the French. Along with the camera, I was provided the zoom Canon EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L II USM. I appreciated the solid body and the fluidity and precision of the rings. I was just puzzled zoom lock button, in my opinion, unnecessary given that the total absence of games actually prevents the inadvertent sliding of the inner barrel.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III: Features and Functionality

Taking pictures with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III makes you feel instantly a professional. Also because it is hard to go unnoticed shooting with a camera body so massive and important. On the other hand, if you have not seen it is easy to take with discretion, thanks to shooting silent, in a clear manner that reduces the noise generated from the shutter and mirror.

The focus, as introduced in the beginning, is really good. Accurate and fast, and completely configurable. There is an entire section of the menu dedicated specifically to auto focus. Good also the metering module, even if it is calibrated in such a way too conservative. Too easy to get underexposed shots. Efficient functioning of the Auto ISO, although the choice of the minimum speed selectable from only 9 options.

Good also the work done by the automatic white balance: just laying in the room I had to rightly select the color temperature manually. Finally, the excellent battery life: about 500 shots and some video footage, I have spent just half battery.

If we talk about the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is impossible not to mention his skills in the video industry. Suffice it to say that this full-frame DSLR records 1080p Full HD video with complete control of all the options. There is also the possibility to record stereo sound at 48 KHz, with dedicated microphone input. Instead affect photographers the ability of bursts from 6fps and the creation of HDR images directly during shooting.

The files created by Canon EOS 5D Mark III are good, and ready to use for printing already with the standard settings. Certainly, they are heavy. The 22 mega pixels are felt, filling cards easily with about 30 MB for a RAW to JPG highest quality. The high resolution, does not create particular problems in terms of noise digital.

The Canon seems to have done an excellent job in their noise removal, virtually invisible even to the sci-fi sensitivity of ISO 25,600. Obviously, you lose detail, so for best results you should still rise above the ISO 3,200 only when it is necessary. It definitely helps the presence of the Canon EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L II USM, sharp and contrasted even at full aperture.

As you can see in the shots in the gallery has a really beautiful, with a yield pleasant even lights out of focus. In the comparison between JPG and RAW, there are striking differences: it is then the photographer choose which format is most appropriate depending on the situation.

Conclusion

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III SLR is finally a complete and very powerful. Difficult to find a weak point. After a short period of adaptation becomes an extension of the arm of the photographer. Highly recommended, of course, to those who can afford the considerable expense to purchase, especially when combined with the equally powerful Canon EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L II USM.
