ASUS MeMo Pad HD 7: Review

There is no doubt that ASUS is among the main players of the Android tablet market, thanks to its innovative line Transformer Pad, the Padfone and collaboration with Google’s Nexus 7, but in recent months, the Taiwanese company has added a new range series of products with the Asus MeMO Pad For if the Transformer Pad are characterized by the ability to attach a keyboard and turn into a laptop, the MeMO Pad tablet are stand-alone bright colored and the lower price.

ASUS MeMo Pad HD 7: Design

From the aesthetic point of view, ASUS Memo Pad HD 7 is very reminiscent of the lines of the Nexus 7, but with the rear colored and glossy. The dimensions are 196.8 × 120.6 × 10.8 mm and weight of 302 grams. The front is almost completely occupied by the 7-inch display – IPS type and the large viewing angle, with a resolution of 1,280 × 800 and a density of about 216 ppi – but also includes the front camera of 1.2 megapixels, and in a bottom is the logo ASUS.

On the sides, we find the microUSB port, microphone for recording video and the audio jack of 3.5 mm at the top, the power button and the volume rocker are on the right while the microSD slot is on the left. The back of ASUS Pad MeMO HD 7, houses the 5 megapixel camera, an ASUS logo and the slot at Stereo speakers with SonicMaster technology, developed by ASUS in collaboration with the Danish Bang & Olufsen. This slot is located in correspondence of a bevel on the rear shell, so as not to block the sound when the tablet is resting on a flat surface.

Inside the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 beats the heart of MediaTek MTK8125 chipset with quad-core processor 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. The storage space is 16 GB, of which about 12 GB available to the user, expandable with microSD up to 32 GB. To these, ASUS adds 16 GB of free storage for a year on its cloud storage service.

The MeMO Pad HD 7 does not include 3G/4G connectivity, but we find the Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0, for connections with low power consumption, and GPS. Are absent NFC connectivity and, at the time, support for Miracast (will be supported with the update coming to Android 4.3) that ASUS has integrated in all his other tablet; inevitable the sensors accelerometer, gyroscope and compass (only absent, the light sensor).

The rear camera has no flash, but has autofocus and can record video at 1080p. There are also the panorama mode, burst, HDR and beauty as well as a series of filters. The front camera has the same main mode, but records video at 720p. The lithium polymer battery has a capacity of 3,950 mAh (15 Wh) and the manufacturer indicates a range of approximately 10 hours.

That Android are preloaded on ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 is 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean), in almost stock version, since the ASUS Launcher does not modify the operating system interface very limited additions of notification bar, and shortcuts to the Quick Settings activate and deactivate the various connectivity. They can be turned off, Bringing the tablet to the look of the Nexus 7 Vanilla.

Then there is some ASUS app preloaded on the tablet, including the previously mentioned client cloud Webstorage, Supernote to take notes and notes, App Locker, App Backup, ASUS To-Do, Which is always synchronized with Google Tasks, photo gallery and ASUS Studio the File Manager.

As in other ASUS tablets, then we have the Mini Apps fluctuating executables simultaneously with other applications. On the front of the settings are the usual AudioWizard of SonicMaster ASUS Splendid and to adjust color temperature and saturation.

We have used and put under stress our sample of ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 for a few weeks, and we can safely say they are more than satisfied by the performance of the tablet. We never encountered any slowdown or jamming of the operating system, and all applications have had a smooth operation, even in multitasking.

This is also to confirm the maturity acquired by MediaTek chipset in the production, to the point that it is now chosen by important brands like ASUS, Acer, Sony and Huawei.

While browsing the Internet, with both the stock browser and with the pre-installed Chrome, it is fast and fluid. Although the camera is not essential in a tablet, the sensor mounted on the MeMO Pad HD 7 could take pictures and videos of pretty good quality. Also on the multimedia front, we were positively surprised by the audio quality of the integrated speakers, to regularly use the tablet for listening to music with the application TuneIn Radio Pro.

The quality of the IPS display has been very good, but if other brands penalize their entry-level products with panels of inferior quality, ASUS has nevertheless, included a good screen, which allows, for example, to watch a movie with the tablet placed on the table, thanks to the wide viewing angle. Satisfaction for the life of the battery, which had no difficulty reaching the end to the day even with several hours of web radio and other applications. Shame about the lack of a physical solution to share the video with a TV (HDMI / MHL) and the lack of support for the USB-On-The-Go. We hope that it can be enabled with a future software update.

Conclusion

In general, we can be very satisfied with the small tablet ASUS house. The performance of the MeMO Pad HD 7 have nothing to envy to other higher-end tablets and the price makes it definitely a good buy, recommended to all those who are looking for a tablet pocket to take with him.
